Why did Rebel Wilson use a surrogate? Her fertility struggles
Rebel Wilson announced the birth of her first child, Royce Lilian Elizabeth Wilson, via an Instagram photo of the baby. In the pic, Baby Royce is in a pink onesie and unicorn slippers. “I am ready to give little Roycie all the love imaginable,” the caption reads. “Much respect to all the mums out there! Proud to be in your club.”
Wilson also revealed via the caption that a surrogate delivered Royce: “[I] particularly wanted to thank my gorgeous surrogate who carried her and birthed her with such grace and care. Thank you for helping me start my own family, it’s an amazing gift. The BEST gift!!”
Rebel’s fertility struggles likely inspired her to try surrogacy
Rebel Wilson’s trip to a fertility doctor in 2019 initiated her weight loss journey. The doctor told her she stood a better chance of harvesting and freezing her eggs if she lost weight, Wilson told People. She continued:
“He was right. I was carrying around a lot of excess weight. It’s almost like I didn’t think of my own needs. I thought of a future child’s needs that really inspired me to get healthier.”
Rebel’s polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis further complicated issues. PCOS affects a patient’s fertility. Wilson told Stellar Magazine that she hoped to start a family, but she wasn’t confident it was going to happen:
“I feel like (it’s) not over yet. It’s kind of an emotional roller coaster. But I’ve been trying my best, so whatever will be, will be.”
In December 2020, Rebel informed fans via Instagram Live of her decision to freeze her eggs. Wilson advised career women looking to start a family to explore the option. “Getting to 40s is kind of even leaving it a little too late,” Wilson said. “It’s better to do it a bit earlier if you can.”
In early May 2021, Rebel posted an ominous update on Instagram about fertility. She wrote: “I got some bad news today… To all the women out there struggling with fertility, I feel ya. The universe works in mysterious ways and sometimes it all doesn’t make sense…but I hope there’s light about to shine through all the dark clouds.”
Rebel’s fertility struggles likely inspired her to try surrogacy. Wilson told People that if she met the right person to start a family with, she would give it a shot. If not, she would go for it alone. Rebel said:
“You have so many options with surrogacy and sperm donors. I only started thinking of fertility when I was 39 so you feel quite late but then there are women in their mid-40s who’ve been successful. Look at Janet Jackson, it’s pretty inspiring.”
Wilson will likely raise her child alongside her partner Ramona Agruma
Wilson hasn’t discussed her parenting arrangements, but we suspect her partner Ramona Agruma will help raise Royce.
Rebel announced her relationship with Agruma via a June 2022 Instagram post. “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess,” Wilson wrote a photo of herself and Ramona.
Wilson, who’d previously only dated men, mentioned being in a relationship during a May 2022 interview with People but didn’t reveal her partner’s name. The actress said the pair spoke on the phone for months before meeting. “It was a bit old-school in that sense – very romantic,” she said.
Rebel described the relationship as different compared to her previous ones. She explained: “There were times — I’m not saying with all my exes, they’re great — but there were some times that I was probably putting up with that I shouldn’t have. It feels different to be in a really healthy relationship.”
Agruma, a brand ambassador for Bee Goddess jewelry, hosted Rebel’s baby shower. Rebel told People that Agruma ‘went above and beyond to make it a special day.’ “It was the most gorgeous baby shower with friends from around the world,” Wilson added. Wilson praised Agruma for being ‘so amazing and such a great partner.’
Rebel refuted reports that she and Agruma were engaged. The engagement rumors emerged after the pair were spotted wearing diamond rings at George Clooney’s Casamigos Halloween Party. “Thanks for the well-wishes, but we are NOT engaged,” Rebel wrote on her Instagram story on 5th November 2022.
